The old adage “I’m drawing a line in the sand” isn’t something I stop and think about really ever. Some people know its meaning to be “the line we don’t cross” or a boundary. Others know its meaning to be “the point of no return” or a marker that shows permanent and irreversible change–life will never be the same. Either way, it’s a marker to hold our lives up to in accountability and remembrance. Celebrations, tattoos, public declarations, photographs, cross country moves, and rings– all lines we draw.
Sometimes the line is Taco Tuesdays forever and ever. Other times it’s promising to love and support someone for the rest of your life. For me, I’m here for it all. For my own life, and for yours. I’m here for the promise with words and the ring to remember them by. I’m here for the Yosemite hike where you realized you wanted to spend all your days with your hiking partner. I’m here for that California beach sunset you share with the entire family who hasn’t been together in one place in 20 years. I’m here for grandpa’s laughter at his own weird joke, and I’m also here for the last hug your grandma gives you.
May we see moments, big and small, and find ways to draw lines in the sand. May we celebrate the little things and find ways to document them so we remember choices we’ve made and mountains we’ve climbed. In doing so, may we create the life we’ve always wanted with those we’ve always dreamed of sharing it with.
