The Kate Noelle Portrait Experience

Your personal archivist, Captain of Wonder, and master of light.

“We have used Kate to photograph our family for over a decade now. I'm grateful every year when I see the photos because it’s the one time of the year I know I'll look good in the photos too (since I'm usually the one taking the photos).”

About Kate

Kate Noelle is a photographer with almost 20 years of experience photographing families and portraits throughout Southern California and Worldwide. She is celebrated as much for her art as she is for the way she is loved by clients, their families, creative partners, and publications alike. She is known for her calm demeanor that puts parents and kids at ease in front of her camera, and she is widely sought-after for her ability to navigate the unpredictability of young children with humour and confidence.

Kate Noelle walks the line between moment-led narrative photography and detail-oriented editorial portraiture, all with a seasoned sense of light and composition. Kate is unapologetically earnest, balanced with delightfully unpredictable wit and whimsey. She brings a unique blend of approachability and professionalism, reverence for honest moments, and gentle art direction that creates images that are not only beautiful but also capture those magical in-between moments we cherish.

My Approach

I take the time to get down on the ground and meet your kids so they feel comfortable, and will always pose mama in all the good angles. I’ll get everyone smiling at the camera, but I will also have some games up my sleeve so you get to take home fun memories in addition to great photos. I will hold space for big feelings and I know how to coax a real giggle out of a kid who has decided, firmly, that they are not smiling today.

I stay patient, I stay present, and I stay ready, because the best moments don’t announce themselves. I’m the photographer who is always on the lookout for those split second glimmers of the family life you dreamed of. These are the photos that will ache with nostalgia twenty years from now. The ones that remind you — this was the good part. We were in it, all of us. And we didn’t miss it.

For those rare days the entire family is together. Having photos taken with your entire family is so special and end up being some of the most cherished photographs. Whether you’re six people or 50, document this once in a lifetime event with professional photos.

“My son was 22 months then. She was so patient with him and knew all the tricks to get him to smile and be happy. She knows how to make you feel comfortable being photographed. We will definitely go to Kate for future family photo sessions.”

A Quick Story

When I was young, my father handed me his Minolta and asked me to photograph the view from our patio. Months later, he asked me to do it again. When the prints came back, I saw where there had been orange groves, there was now a parking lot. The world had moved on, but the photograph had not.

That is the quiet miracle of a photograph. It does not care about time, nor does it negotiate with change. It simply holds, perfectly and permanently, what was. I think about that afternoon more than my dad probably knows, and the weight of it lives in every photo I take.

A Home for your Photos

I think digital photos are important, so I deliver them every time. But I believe your photos deserve a life that breathes, something that feels like forever in your hands. They deserve a home unaffected by ever-changing technology and broken hard drives.

So whether you choose to adorn your walls with beautiful portraits and sweet memories or chronicle the whole experience in a finished album, consider me the architect of that home. My job isn’t done when the shutter clicks, it’s done when your photos have somewhere permanent to live.

“She made very camera shy people feel comfortable having their photos taken. We live in Texas now and there’s no comparison! We might just have to schedule trips to California just to have her take our family photos moving forward.”

“I like getting pictures with the best picture taker in the world.”

I like how nice she is. It’s very nice to spend time with family while taking pictures. It feels good to wear fancy clothes and I always like the pictures when they come back.

Frequently Asked Questions

You’re bound to have a few questions when considering a family portrait session. It’s always my goal to bring clarity and calm to your experience, so I’ve curated some common questions to answer for you.

Do you offer mini sessions?

Yes, but only on select days in the fall, at pre-determined locations. They’re 15-20 minute timelots and you’ll receive 20 images.

When should we book our session?

Ideally, as soon as you can, but it depends on the time of year. Fall tends to book out by the end of September. But January through May is pretty flexible, and I can accommodate short term booking better.

What time of day do you recommend?

Location and time of year will be the biggest factors in answering this. If your location is at the beach, we will likely opt to start your session 45min before the sun is scheduled to set so we have 15 minutes of “afterglow” to finish out your session. If your location has lots of tree shade, we have more flexibility with timing. Keep in mind that the sun sets at different times throughout the year–summer sunsets are closer to 8pm, while winter sunsets are closer to 5pm in southern California.

What happens if my kids melt down?

If we’re being real, they probably will at some point in this process. But coming into this process with realistic expectations and looooots of patience will be key. I always try to shoot a blend of “smile at the camera” portraits, family interaction, and play photos. Most of my favorite photos happen in the unplanned in-between moments. If you want more tips on how to have the family photo session of your dreams, sign up for our newsletter to receive a free guide.

How long does a session last?

Sessions are up to an hour long, but if you have children under 7, their attention spans may require breaks or a shorter session duration.

What if the weather is bad?

Outdoor portraits are, unfortunately, affected by weather sometimes. However, the weather is typically mild and seasonal in southern California. If the weather isn’t aligning with the vision you had for your session, I’m happy to work together to find another time, day, or location — depending on availability. All rescheduled sessions must be completed within 30 days of the original session date. Please note that session payments are non-refundable.

What if my husband hates taking photos?

Most of the time as adults, we don’t care for photos of ourselves because either we don’t like the way we look, or we’d rather be doing something else. You aren’t alone in feeling this way. But here’s the way I see it– the purpose of family photos is to document this moment in time, the season you’re in…. Together. Kids don’t care what you think of yourself in photos, they only care that you’re in photos WITH them. So reframing the experience to be an hour of your life that you get to have fun TOGETHER as a family will hopefully help.

I have a smart phone, so why do I need professional photos?

I love phone photos for everyday moments, but professional photography offers something different: intentional lighting, expert guidance, beautiful editing, and authentic collective emotion. Most importantly, it ensures the whole family gets to be in the frame together. There’s no substitute for those photos of your family’s giggles and smiles in a cuddle puddle.

My extended family is coming to town. Do you do large family photos?

I do, and I love them. They are logistically different than smaller family sessions though, and require a extra planning. I’ve done large family photos up to 100 people before, and they’re so special!

What should we wear for our family session?

I recommend coordinating colors, not matching. Choosing the same level of “fancy” is also smart. No need for mama to be in a formal dress when the kids are in tshirts. Check out my family season inspiration board for more ideas.

Do you use AI?

Yes, for the work behind the scenes, but never to fabricate the images themselves. I’ve spent years training my editing workflow to reflect my artistic eye, so that AI can do the heavy lifting while I handle the finesse. Every photo I deliver was made with a camera, in a moment that actually happened. I believe AI should be used to polish, not create. That’s a line I won’t cross. So, will I use AI to make all your kids smile? Not unless you and I discuss it. I prefer the real moments.
